A great night with Pippa at the Ringwood RSL on Saturday 21 June!
It was a good-sized and enthusiastic audience (at least, judging by the whooping and hollering on our recording) for dinner and the show. The music gelled well and we even managed two unrehearsed requests. There were calls for ‘one more’ even after ‘just one more’!
A few dancers, too.
We received a couple of emails the next day: ‘Have listened to Pippa many times and havn’t heard her sound better —-flute and strings rhythm worked really well’ ‘Thank you – a wonderful night, thoroughly enjoyed by all !’
Thanks to John Craig for suggesting the event and providing some of the equipment.
A lot of preparation went into this event: graphics for printed materials, lighting, candles and gemstones for the tables, … . So many hours put in – especially by Ann! And then there was the preparation of the Ringwood RSL’s Function Room. Thanks to Justin, Ashley, Andrew and Marion for helping with setting up, working the door and packing up.
Marion’s really getting the hang of the photographs, too. Some examples below.
‘The notes dip and flow with the ease that comes from artistry of a high calibre which has made her one of the most sought after and admired performers on the Australian jazz scene’

The Ringwood RSL has loads of off-street parking and is opposite Ringwood Railway Station.
Kevin was originally scheduled to play in a guitar duo but illness interfered.
Ann Craig (flute) stepped in and, on Saturday night, we were joined by Brian Paulusz  (who was available to play guitar at 5 minutes notice but for only 20 minutes), giving Frank O’Brien (bass) just enough time to travel from his previous set!
On the Sunday, Ann, Kevin and Frank settled into some playing when Anne Hayres appeared, joining the trio with some vocals.
On both occasions, the audience was enthusiastic and supportive.
Kevin filled the vacant guitar spot for the Synopsis Combo at the Cumberland Hotel (Saturday) and the Public Inn (Sunday) playing Colin’s sax favourites.
Colin and Kevin played in The Jazz Drive together so it was great to renew the musical experience.
Three great sets with the Jazz Notes Quintet: Luella at the front. Two sets on Saturday night (at the Public Inn and the Cumberland), both with Chelsea on drums. Then, Sunday night at the Bridge Hotel with Mark on drums.
Enthusiastic and appreciative audiences at all of them.
Thanks to everyone who played with Kevin: Alex (sax), Andrew Eames (bass), Ann Craig (flute), Anne Hayres (vocals), Ben Hooper (keys), Brian Paulusz (guitar), Chelsea Allen (drums), Colin Garrett (tenor saxophone), Frank O’Brien (bass), Jess Wood (bass), Luella McCormack (vocals), Mark Voogd (drums), Monique Zucco (drums), Nicole Thorne (piano), Simon Atkinson (drums).
To the organisers: congratulations on a great effort. We’d expected to strike problems at the inaugural Castlemaine Jazz Festival but had none. Such a good vibe, too. (Even the weather was great!)
We can only hope that you had enough fun to make it happen again in 2015 – perhaps extending into Monday.
On Fri, 23 May 2014, Ruskin Park Primary School celebrated its 50th anniversary at Wyreena Gallery: a cocktail party in the atrium to the music of Jazz Notes.
Ann Craig teaches various intruments at Ruskin Park so, naturally, it was to her that they turned for the event’s music.
Ann and Kevin played a relaxing Sunday afternoon set at The Treble Clef Jazz Lounge and were joined again by Risa Kodani (vocals) for a few songs. (We’re told that singing is good for babies in utero!)
Debbie featured at the Kingston Arts ‘Curtain Call’ competition and has invited a few friends to join her in her debut at the Chandelier Room in Moorabbin at 9:30pm on Saturday, 29 March, 2014.
